Are you Prepared? Use this step by step check list-

TASK LIST- TO DO NOW

  • 1. Make a list of pet friendly motels in several directions depending on how the storm is moving.
    • Helpful websites-

  • 2. Ask an out of state friend or relative to be the emergency contact for your family and pets
  • 3. Copy of important papers and information to have in a waterproof zip lock bag-
    • -Veterinary name, address and phone number
    • -Health records (vaccinations, allergies, medications) for each animal
    • -Name of Microchip Company, phone number and chip number for each animal
    • -Make a flyer for each of your pets-
      • -Take a photo of your family and your pet together and one of just your pet
      • -Put the name of the pet at the top of the flyer; add both photos, your information, your out of state contact information, unusual markings or colorings on the animal
      • -Make 10 copies of each flyer
    • -Other phone numbers to have with you-

  • 4. Have a large carrier for each of your pets with room for them to stand up and move around as well as room for food and water bowls and a shoebox size litter box, if needed.
    • -Mark your name, address and phone numbers on each carrier with permanent market
    • -Add additional tag with the emergency out of state contact info
    • -Put a laminated label on the carrier with any medications (included dose and frequency) with Veterinary Hospital and pharmacy phone numbers.
    • -Line each carrier with a puppy training pad in case of accidents or spills
  • 5. Put identification on each animal
    • -Microchip and register each of your pets NOW
    • -Collar or harness with rabies number, pet name, your name, address phone numbers
    • - Add additional tag with emergency out of state informations
    • -Have a spare writable collar for temporary addresses
      • -Ask your veterinarian about them or have a piece of tyvek from the hardware store that you can cut to size and staple around the animals neck

EVACUATION (OR “HUNKER DOWN”) SUPPLY KIT TO HAVE ON HAND NOW

  • -2 week supply of food (dry and canned) per animal (rotate out half way through hurricane season- August 15th)
  • -Can opener if needed
  • -Food and water dishes plus 1 extra in case of damage
  • -Spoon or scoop to measure and/or mix food
  • -2 week supply of water per animal
    • A 10 lb. animal drinks 1 pint (16 oz.) of water per day
    • A 20 lb. animal drinks 1 quart (32 oz.) of water per day
    • A 50 lb. animal drinks _ gallon (64 oz.) of water per day
  • -1 large carrier/cage per animal (see #4 above for labeling info)
  • -A properly fitting collar/harness with tags on your pet at all times
  • -A sturdy 6-foot long leash for each dog (not the retractable kind)
  • -2 week supply of medications
  • -Tranquilizers or calming remedies
    • For Cats-
      • Felaway Spray- available at Pet Supermarkets, Petsmart, Petco
      • Rescue Remedy- order from Dr. Foster and Smith catalog - www.drsfostersmith.com or 1-800-381-7179
    • For Dogs
      • Rescue Remedy- see above
  • -Pet first aid kit

  • -2 week supply of cat litter, liners and litter pans, if applicable
    • -Plastic bags to handle waste
  • -Cleaning supplies-
    • -Paper towels, liquid soap (for food and water bowls), Clorox wipes, unscented baby wipes
    • -Toys and special comfort items (favorite blanket)
    • -Muzzle, if necessary
    • -Temporary writeable collar, permanent marker (see #5 above) and stapler
    • -Extra puppy training pads for under food and water bowls and inside carriers.
